ブハラの観光名所で、みやげものを売っていた老人に声をかけられた。扱っている品物には興味が湧かなかったので、あしらうようにして「私は古いスザニを探しているんだ」と言うと、老人は「ちょっと待て」と電話をかけ始めた。そして「こっちに来い」と私を促し、倉庫に連れて行ってくれた。
これは、山積みになったスザニの埃にまみれながら発見した、1900年前後と思われるもの。イギリスのアーツアンドクラフツ運動と時代を同じくし、デザインにも共通するものを感じる。見つけた時には興奮を隠せなかった。
In a tourist area in Bukhara, I was approached by an old man who was selling souvenirs. I wasn't interested in the goods he was selling, so I brushed him off and said, ‘I'm looking for an old suzani’, to which the old man said, ‘Hold on a minute’ and started to make a phone call. He then urged me to ‘come here’ and took me to the warehouse.
This was found in a pile of suzanis, covered in dust, and thought to have been produced around 1900. It was from the same period as the Arts and Crafts movement in the UK, and I could see similarities in the design. I couldn't hide my excitement when I found it.

紫に染めたあたりに多少の色落ちが見られます。
